Below is some Information on Canine Influenza from MERCK animal health, the makers of our Bivalent Influenza Vaccine.

What is Canine Influenza?

Canine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory disease that is caused by canine influenza virus (CIV) Type A. There are 2 known strains in the United States:

1) CIV H3N8: first reported in greyhounds in 2003. Since then, CIV H3N8 has spread to at least 41 states. This virus is of equine origin and can be difficult to diagnose.

2) CIV H3N2: recently found in the United States. This virus is of avian origin and spread to 30 states by April 2016. *Most recently this strain has been found in Gainsville, Florida*

How is Canine Influenza spread?

Canine influenza spreads the same way as the common cold in humans. Canine influenza viruses are most commonly spread through direct dog contact (sniffing, licking, nuzzling); through the air (coughing and sneezing); via contaminated surfaces (sharing water bowls or toys); or through contaminated humans (with viruses on their hands or clothing).

Where could my dog catch Canine Influenza?

The more your dog socializes with other dogs, the higher the risk of contracting canine influenza and other infectious respiratory diseases.

Quickly asses your dogs risk:

Does your dog: Visit doggie day care? Board at a boarding facility or pet hotel? Attend training classes? Play at dog parks? Participate in dog-friendly events? Visit a groomer or the local pet store? Often greet other dogs during walks?

Clinical Signs of Canine Influenza:

Most cases of canine influenza are mild. However, up to 20% of infected dogs will have moderate or severe illness. Common signs are: Coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge or ocular discharge, decreased appetite and lethargy. In some cases, dogs may run a fever and demonstrate signs of depression. High fever and pneumonia may be seen in more severe cases. These clinical signs can last from a few days to several weeks depending on the severity of the disease.

  • "I was greatly impressed by the welcoming warmth of the entire staff at Rubio Pet Hospital. Alyssa, the Office Manager, showed me different affordable preventive plans available if I wanted to get a on a program to maintain my dog Herschel's health. Dr Rubio and his wife were kind, thorough and attentive to every detail. I highly recommend them to everyone who has a pet or is thinking about getting one too!"

  • "My Dog Foster's tail was caught in a vacuum cleaner and badly injured. I thought the tail would have to be amputated, but Dr. Rubio gently shaved away the hair, gave me medications, solutions to soak the tail and ointment - and within six days all the black tissue on Foster's tail had dried up and flaked off! The follow up visit brought delight to Dr. Rubio, as it did to me. Thank you, Dr. Rubio, for giving me the time, medications and careful instructions for tending to Foster's tail. I am so glad I came to you! Of course, I had a lot of folks praying for Foster's tail, so I give thanks to God, the Great Physician, as well!"

  • "Took my dog to a mobile shots veterinarian and each time my dog would go crazy. This last time, I was told my dog needed to be sedated and they recommended I take her to a veterinarian facility. I chose Rubio Pet Hospital.
What a huge difference. The place is fresh and clean! My dog was not nearly as nervous as she was at the mobile site. The doctor and his assistant was so accommodating and made my dog somewhat feel at ease. Once we began the shots, I was able to hold and comfort her. What a humongous difference! It took less than ten minutes to get her vaccinated (including the vaccine into my dogs nose), and everything worked out great. Fantastic experience! You now have a customer - patient for life."
